Uncovering Grand Canal history in Sallins

Along the Grand Canal in Sallins lies a piece of canal infrastructure that until recently, lay hidden in the bushes.  In recent years, a cooperative of local groups uncovered the dock and obtained funding for the first phase of the Sallins Drydock Restoration project.

Come along and celebrate the work so far and the unveiling of a plaque, on Sunday Oct 29 2023 at 1200.  Local historian, Paddy Behan, will explain the history and the engineering of the Drydock, and its relevance and importance in supporting passenger and cargo boats of the Grand Canal Company.

Location:  Sallins along the Grand Canal near Sallins Pier Estate.  Attendees are asked to walk from Sallins to the location.

Groups involved:  The Plaque was created with the support of Eamon Sinnott & Partners, Waterways Ireland Heritage Grant scheme, IWAI Kildare, IntoKildare, Inland Waterways Association of Ireland (IWAI), Liam Kenny, Bargetrip.ie, and Cill Dara Le Gaeilge.
