In July 2019, the Robertstown Barge, 52M Eustace, journeyed to the Inner Lakes on the Shannon, the first step in her refurbishment.

52M was built in 1928 by Vickers and had some legendary boatmen during her trading days.  Among them were Michael and John Connolly from Graiguenamanagh with Matt Duggan, Paddy, Tom and Joe Connolly with Jim Nevin from Shannon Harbour, and Mick McDonagh with Bert Conroy and Tim Lenehan from Robertstown.

The history of 52M is documented in Cool Metal Clear Water and on the Heritage Boat Association site.  The boatmen’s stories are told in Through the Locks edited by Joe O’Reilly and Catriona Killally.

52M, the Robertstown Barge, featured in the famed Robertstown Canal Festas.  Here are some photos of visitors to the events that took place between 1965 and 1975.

Work continues on the refurbishment and there are events planned for 2023 – volunteers needed.   Keep up to date on progress and events at Robertstown Community Amenities Association
