Video – Boats on their way to Naas Rally 2022

‘Great weekend recording at the Naas Boat Rally with the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland Kildare Branch and the Heritage Boat Association on a collaborative video heritage project that takes on the blue and green trails into Kildare along the Grand Canal from Hazelhatch to Naas.

Along the way we will meet the passionate owners of some heritage barges, learn about the specially built G-Barges during the Emergency, head up along Arthur’s Way to take in the views from Oughterard Round Tower, explore names such as Ponsonby and Shackleton, and meet local historians to find out more about why landmarks such as Soldiers Island in Sallins is called just that.

With over 30 boats at the rally, some dating back into the 19th century, we recorded some beautiful footage of the barges on the Naas Canal, in the Harbour and coming through Locks.

Thank you to all the team at Inland Waterways Association of Ireland – Kildare and the Heritage Boat Association for all their help.  Their passion, enthusiasm, and knowledge really keeps the story and heritage of the canals alive.

This project is supported by Kildare County Council, Waterways Ireland, and Creative Ireland County Kildare Heritage Office.
