Grand Canal – Hazelhatch

Notice of Canal Bank Clearance and Cleanup

Waterways Ireland will shortly be conducting a clean-up of the northern bank of the Grand Canal at Hazelhatch, Co Kildare, clearing the bank for maintenance and access.

The accumulation of materials along the canal bank is hampering bank maintenance and compromises staff safety.

Objects to be removed include non-native / invasive plants & herbs, tarps, wood, stoves, make-shift structures, decorative items, paving slabs, benches, canoes, rafts, bicycles, signage and lighting nailed to trees etc.

Some of the items pose a fire risk, with an associated risk of loss of habitat and trees. All flammable materials and items including stoves and fire pits will be removed from the bank to eliminate this potential risk to the canal habitat, and its users.

Waterways Ireland is providing 3 weeks’ notice of the plans and advise that any items owners wish to retain should be removed to storage either on your vessel or elsewhere before 16 December 2024. Waterways Ireland will facilitate boat owners by retaining items removed from the canal bank for 30 days for collection, before disposing of them. Please note removed items may not be returned to the bank.

This clean-up is being conducted by Waterways Ireland in accordance with the provisions of S.I. No. 247/1988 – Canals Act, 1986 (Bye-Laws), 1988.

Waterways Ireland thanks its customers for their cooperation in this matter.
