Reminder
Personal Submissions as part of the Waterways Ireland (WI) consultation process on the Draft Bye Laws, are due by 1600 hrs on October 2 2023.
The next steps, after the public consultation ends on Oct 2 are:
1. Draft Canal and Shannon bye laws are amended by Waterways Ireland based on feedback from public consultation.
2. A Consultation report is produced and published by Waterways Ireland, as soon as practical after the consultation closes.
3. Revised draft bye laws are published by Waterways Ireland on its website.
The precise dates for steps 2-4 are not yet known

On July 18 2018, the Oireachtas (Irish Parliament) passed an Act to amend and extend the Wildlife Act 1976 , the Canals Act 1986 and the Heritage Act 1995 and to provide for related matters.
The Heritage Act – Canals 2018 states ‘it is the duty of Waterways Ireland to undertake the care, management and maintenance of the canals and other canal property as a public amenity for use by the public’
The Act describes the powers given to Waterways Ireland which include:
- the making of bye laws for the canals and what they cover
- the process to be followed when making bye laws
- what is deemed an offence and the fixed penalty fees
- authorised officers and warrants of appointment
