A Lough Erne Rally in 1967 is the first recorded IWAI event on the Erne. The formation of our Branch occurred in1979 while a second NI branch based in Scarva was formed a year later. Sadly the Scarva Branch folded and for a period of time the Erne Branch became the sole custodian of the Northern Ireland waterways.
Today there are five branches in NI and a sixth sister branch on the Erne which is the Belturbet Branch in the Republic of Ireland. The Belturbet Branch serves the Southern Erne and the gateway to the ShannonErne Waterway leading to the River Shannon at Leitrim. All the branches of the IWAI family are a testimony to the enthusiasm and vision of many volunteer members who have served the IWAI faithfully and in particular have ensured that the Erne still remains a magnificent boating paradise for all to enjoy.
