Due to continued low water levels on the Royal Canal during 2017 the boat Henrik Ibsen had to be lifted and transferred to the Shannon to avoid damage from dragging the bottom.

The original water source for the Royal Canal was the Lough Owel feeder. Water currently flows as far as Cullion Fish Farm, flow is then restricted onward to the canal.
