The Nav-Watch Report 2020 identified where work was needed along the Grand Canal, Royal Canal and River Barrow Navigations – our Eastern Inland Waterways.

Overall, this work covers:

  1. Reeds extending into the navigation preventing boats from passing each other and crew getting ashore safely
  2. Weeds, both invasive and others, growing in swathes from late spring to early autumn, preventing boats making passage in the navigation and at times, causing damage to boats.
  3. Silt build up in the navigation, preventing boats from making passage, causing damage to boats when they go aground, creating islands in the navigation, and overall reducing the size of the canal or river basin which can lead to flooding during torrential rain.

Plus fixing jetties and banks where needed.  Waterways Ireland started this work programme in late 2021.  Here we show pictures of some of the work carried out to date – April 2022.  Thank you to all who have logged problems on the Nav-Watch system and to those who have submitted these photographs showing progress.
