Nav-Watch consists of a group of IWAI members, who represent each of the IWAI branches located on the Barrow Line, Grand, Naas and Royal Canals and the River Barrow.
Nav-Watch came about due to difficulties that boaters were having in recent years, while trying to navigate these waterways. Boaters gain first-hand knowledge of navigation and infrastructure problems and can pinpoint the exact location where these occur, when it may not be obvious from the bank.
It was felt that if this information was gathered together in a consistent format, it would be of value to Waterways Ireland when they are planning their maintenance work and resources. To ensure consistency, Nav-Watch developed a survey tool where issues can be logged. The data collected so far, has been collated and passed onto Waterways Ireland.
Our overall project vision is to regain a navigation free from all obstructions, including silt and weed, a place suitable for the passage of boats during the summer months. By providing good data to Waterways Ireland, we assist them in planning and implementing their maintenance programme.
