Invitation

The unveiling of the Drydock Heritage sign, will take place today, October 29, at 1200 at the drydock – on the right-hand side of the Sallins Pier Estate near the start of the towpath trail leading to Naas.

This event will showcase the drydock in Sallins and hopefully lead to more interest in restoring it to its original state. The dry dock is in remarkably good state and could be cleared out and the stonework repointed.

There will be an informative talk by local historian, Paddy Behan, explaining the history and the engineering of this piece of local built heritage, and its relevance and importance in supporting passenger and cargo boats in the early years of the Grand Canal.

This sign has been created with the support of graphic designer Eamon Sinnott, Waterways Ireland, IntoKildare, Inland Waterways Association of Ireland (IWAI), IWAI Kildare, Cill Dara Le Gaeilge and local historian Liam Kenny.

Hope to see you there from 1145 onwards.

Sallins Drydock Restoration Group

Note: We ask attendees to park their cars in the village of Sallins and walk into the Sallins Pier Estate, so that residents of this estate are not inconvenienced by additional traffic and use of their parking bays today.

Drydocks on Ireland’s Inland Waterways

Unique Canal Infrastructure in Kildare
