About The Branch

Our branch’s region covers the waterways from Victoria Lock at Meelick to the Sea Lock at Sarsfield Bridge, Limerick.  We organise and engage in a wide range of water and land-based activities throughout the year, in order to achieve our goals for the navigation, flora and fauna, heritage, training and development of the inland waterways. We have members from afar afield as Cork and Dublin (and even one couple from Germany).

The Lough Derg branch was founded in 1970 as part of the national network of regionally based branches of The Inland Waterways Association of Ireland – itself founded in 1954.  The voluntary body of inland waterways enthusiasts advocates the use, maintenance, protection, restoration and improvement of the inland waterways of Ireland.

We organise many events throughout the year including numerous Cruise In Company (CIC) events and our impressive annual Lough Derg rally.  The Lough Derg rally is now in its 44th year. It has become a spectacular floating carnival attracting significant numbers of visitors to harbour towns and villages all around the lake

As a branch, we take a great deal of pride in supporting our local businesses and promoting sustainable interaction with the lake and the thousands of responsible users and visitors that enjoy its magnificent offerings.  We sincerely hope you see the benefits and beauty of Lough Derg and the fantastic work its members provide and support. If you are not already a member we would encourage you to join the IWAI and support an exceptionally worthwhile cause.
