For those with an interest in Local history, and in particular for anyone who has navigated the waters of Lough Ree, Wednesday the 11th, Saturday the 14th and Saturday the 28th of November are dates to write in your Diary.
Wednesday the 11th sees the launch of a new book by RTE Midlands Correspondent Ciaran Mullooly, which has a very strong waterways theme.
‘Back To The Future: Reflections on rural Ireland, recession and renewal around Lough Ree is a collection of writings on subjects such as John Connell , the last living resident of an island (Inchbofin) on Lough Ree, the mysterious death of animals on Clawinch Island, the Big Freeze on the lake in 2010 and the author’s own ‘virgin’ journey by motor cruiser from Athlone to Enniskillen.
The book also features an analysis of development around the lake, job creation prospects in the area, the need for additional water sports facilities and the very serious implications for fishing on Lough Ree caused by the infestation of Asian Clams at the top of the lake in Lanesborough recently.
Ciaran Mullooly wishes to invite all members of the Athlone Branch of the IWAI to attend the launch of the book by Rugby star Robbie Henshaw on Wednesday night November 11th at 8pm in The Bounty, Buccaneers Rugby club house in Clonbrusk, Athlone. It should be a very special night and an opportunity to catch up with friends and neighbours from both ends of Lough Ree.

Marcus Connaughton of RTE Seascapes fame will be launching two publications by the renowned midland mariner and author Donal Boland at the Luan Gallery Athlone, on Saturday 14th November at 3pm
Marcus will be accompanied by some other interesting speakers, and it promises to be an interesting and informative event
