Welcome to IWAI Athlone

This is the website of the Athlone Branch of the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland (IWAI). It is for people who are passionate about our waterways, for boating enthusiasts, and for anyone who enjoys any form of waterways activity. It is for those who are, or would like to be part of an organisation that advocates the use, maintenance, protection, restoration, improvement and enjoyment of the inland waterways of Ireland.

The Mid Shannon region is all within easy reach for our members to enjoy weekend breaks and adventures, and from our central location, all of the river and its tributaries and canals can be explored for longer breaks, whether you choose to set off North or South. There are so many things in the region to experience and enjoy. Magnificent scenery, wildlife, history and heritage is all within easy reach. From Athlone you can choose to enjoy a lake or river experience, as Lough Ree is just a leisurely 2km cruise North of the town.

Cruising in company is always one of our most enjoyed activities, and they are organised every long weekend of the boating season, with many smaller unplanned events frequently happening also. Here, friendships are formed, and conversations about the days cruising and a sing song are always sure to happen as the day draws to a close.

The Shannon Rally is an annual event that attracts huge participation in conjunction with the Carrick on Shannon branch. It is a week-long event of organised activities for all the family, frequently attracting upwards of 100 boats.See the latest itinerary here
